BNR RECREATION CLUB IN A NUT SHELL

BNR Recreation Club was the club of Bengal Nagpur Railway ( BNR ) now known as South Eastern Railway. B N R was formed on 1887 and it was one of the Companies which pioneered development of railways in eastern and central India.

Indian Officers played a major role in the management of the second quarter of the twentieth century.

Some associated organization were formed in 1st of two quarter of twentieth century.

The then officers and staff of the BNR felt to form a recreation platform where Railway employee of BNR could get membership and could refresh themselves at recess time.

It was 1929 the BNR Recreation Club ( BNR RC ) ,later well known as BN Railway and after formation of South Eastern Railway and South Eastern Railway Sports Association, it was popular with as BNR in Calcutta Maiden, was officially established

Primarily BNR RC were associated with Football, Cricket, Hockey and water polo.

Later Club participated in the event of Athletics and Aquatics competition. Club became famous not only in Bengal but also in India due to their remarkable performance.

The Football team reached 1st Division (League) in 1949 and has remained there ever since. They lifted the IFA Shield in 1963 and Rovers Cup in 1964. In 1937 Club had won the Beighton Cup followed by 2nd win on 1939. The team had the distinguished record of lifting the Beighton Cup three times in a row from 1942 to 1945.

Team of club re-appeared in 1958 and the team emerged in the 1st Divn of the Calcutta league in 1963 and won the Hockey League of Calcutta from 1965 to 1967 (ie hattrick). The most happy hunting ground outside Calcutta had been at Bhupal where the team figured in the of the Obaidullah Gold Cup 9 times during 1958 to 1972. A third hattric  from 1958 to 1960 and won the Gold Cup at Bombay in 1965. BNR RC Hockey team won the Khandwa Gold Cup in 1966,1969 and 1970. The Cricket team won the Championship in CAB 1st Divn knock out tournament in 1963.

Some stalwarts behind such remarkable achievements were Sarvasree Shivaji Bose, Late S. Mewalal, Debu Ghosh, Arun Ghosh, Arati Saha ( Gupta ),Late Joginder Singh, Prakash Bhandari, T. Balaram, Varaloo, Late Pijus Mitra, Tarun Goswami, Dipu Ghosh, Tarun Sen, Late Shanti Ghoshal, M.P. Parmer and A. Hamid and so many players.

FEW REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Runners up in 1st Divn Kolkata Hockey league in 2007 and 2009.
  • 3 Runners up in CAB 1st Division league, Knock out and P. Sen Trophy in 2008.
  • RunnersUp in Sikkim Governor’s gold Cup in the year 2009.
  • CAB 1st division Cricket league champion defeating East Bengal in the year 2011. BNR RC never became CAB Cricket league champion.
  • Champion in E.K Nayaner Gold Cup Tournament at Kozhikode defeating Air India.
  • During 2017, BNR RC won Championship in 1st division group B Hockey League, won Lagden Cup and runners up in Lakshmi Vilas Cup, winner of Fair Play Trophy.

FROM BY LAWS OF THE CLUB

As per available record of club, the constitution of BNR RC was passed in the extra-ordinary General meeting held on 20th January, 1956. Constitution was revised and passed in the extra- ordinary General meeting 16th February, 1976.

BNR Recreation club has been ruled by this constitution and as per constitution:-

  1. The name of the club shall be called “B.N. Rly. Recreation club”.
  2. Office –the club shall have its permanent office at the S.E.Railway house, Garden Reach, Calcutta.
  3. Colour- the colour shall be maroon and gold.

THE OBJECT OF THE CLUB

The object shall be to promote games, sports and cultural activities by organization, management and control of the same by all legitimate means.
